The Reading Time & Speech Calculator computes exact reading durations and spoken presentation timing based on the word count and the speed you choose. On average, silent reading takes 1 minute per 238 words, while spoken keynote speeches take 1 minute per 130 words (roughly 650 words for a 5-minute speech).
💡How Reading & Speaking Times are Calculated▼

Adults read silently at an average of 238 WPM (words per minute), while spoken keynote presentations average 130 WPM to allow audience working memory retention. This calculator segments your text into word, sentence, and syllable tokens to output precise durations across reading cohorts and speech formats.

Lexi's Speed vs. Speech Ratio

READING COACH
Average conversational speech is constrained to ~130–150 WPM due to biomechanical tongue and vocal cord mechanics. Silent visual reading, however, can easily exceed 350–500+ WPM because photons transmit directly to your visual word form area without motor speech delays!

Why Reading Is Faster Than Speaking

What the numbers mean, and how to pace a talk. See also reading times for pages and books and the words per minute chart.

1

Speaking Pace (130–160 WPM)

You have to form every sound when you speak, and listeners need pauses to take it in. That's why many speakers aim for about 130 WPM in a talk, with short pauses between ideas.

2

Silent Reading (About 238 WPM)

Silent reading does not require muscular articulation. That's why it's faster than reading aloud: adults average about 238 WPM reading silently versus about 183 WPM aloud (Brysbaert, 2019).

3

Hard Text Takes Longer

Word count alone can mislead. A 1,000-word children's story is quick; a 1,000-word contract is not. This calculator also shows the Flesch-Kincaid grade, a score based on sentence and word length, so you can see how hard a text is.

4

Listening at 1.5×

Many listeners follow speech comfortably at up to about 1.5× speed (about 225 WPM), though this depends on the speaker and the topic. At higher speeds, most people start to miss things.

Frequently Asked Questions About Reading & Speech Calculation

How long does it take to read 1,000 words?▼

Just over 4 minutes at the average adult silent reading speed of 238 words per minute (Brysbaert, 2019). Reading it aloud at about 183 WPM takes about 5½ minutes, and giving it as a talk at 130 WPM takes about 7¾ minutes. Harder text takes longer, which is why the calculator also shows a Flesch-Kincaid grade.

How long does it take to read 2,000 words?▼

About 8½ minutes at the average adult silent reading speed of 238 words per minute (Brysbaert, 2019). Reading it aloud at about 183 WPM takes about 11 minutes, and a talk at 130 WPM takes just over 15 minutes. Two thousand words is a long blog post or a short college essay.

How many words can an average adult read in 1 hour?▼

About 14,000 words. At the average adult speed of 238 words per minute, an hour of uninterrupted silent reading covers 14,280 words (Brysbaert, 2019). In a typical paperback, with 250 to 300 words per page, that is about 48 to 57 pages. Breaks and harder text lower the real total.

Why is silent reading speed so much faster than speaking speed?▼

Speaking takes time because you have to form every sound, and listeners need pauses. Reading has no such limits: adults average about 238 WPM reading silently and about 183 WPM reading aloud (Brysbaert, 2019), and talks are often slower still, at about 130 WPM.

How is Flesch-Kincaid readability calculated?▼

From two averages: words per sentence and syllables per word. Reading Ease = 206.835 − 1.015 × (words ÷ sentences) − 84.6 × (syllables ÷ words), a score from 0 (very hard) to 100 (very easy). Grade Level = 0.39 × (words ÷ sentences) + 11.8 × (syllables ÷ words) − 15.59, a rough US school grade. This calculator shows both.
