A 10-minute speech is about 1,300 to 1,500 words at a normal speaking pace of 130 to 150 words per minute (WPM).

Ten minutes is a typical conference lightning session or a project update. It leaves room for three main points with examples.
| Pace | WPM | Words | Double-spaced pages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slow and deliberate | 110 | 1,100 | 4.4 |
| Presentation pace | 130 | 1,300 | 5.2 |
| Conversational | 150 | 1,500 | 6 |
| Fast and energetic | 170 | 1,700 | 6.8 |
These paces are practical guide values, not fixed rules. Adults read aloud at about 183 WPM on average (Brysbaert, 2019), but prepared speeches run slower because of pauses and emphasis. The best figure is your own: read part of your script aloud for two minutes and count the words.
How to Structure a 10-Minute Speech
About 1,300 words is roughly two and a half single-spaced pages. There is room for a short background section as well as three developed points.
- Opening (1 min, about 130 words): The problem or question, and what listeners will get from the talk.
- Background (1 min 30 sec, about 195 words): Only what people need in order to follow the rest.
- First point (2 min, about 260 words): Your main point, with evidence or an example.
- Second point (2 min, about 260 words): What follows from it, or the biggest obstacle.
- Third point (2 min, about 260 words): What you recommend or what happens next.
- Summary and next step (1 min 30 sec, about 195 words): Recap the three points and say what you want people to do.
This split is a suggestion at 130 WPM, so adjust it to suit your material.
Watch out for: Running out of time before the conclusion. Decide in advance which example you will drop if you are behind at the five-minute mark, so the ending survives.
Check Your Own Script
Paste your text into the speech time calculator to see how long it takes at each pace, then read it aloud with a timer. Most people speak faster when nervous, while pauses and audience reactions add time, so leave about 10% spare. To compare speech with other activities, see the words per minute chart.
